The fall season is filled with some pretty interesting, and not so interesting anime. I have to say that I haven’t been very excited to watch any of the new shows with a couple exceptions. First Look: Summer 2014

This summer is full of some really promising anime, and a great variety of genres. Being able to watch anything from horror to slice of life is making out to be quite an interesting season for anime. It also seems to be the season of OST’s. There are so many amazing soundtracks that I am actually looking forward to this season wrapping up. Unfortunately there are some that I will need to cut out early whether it’s because of time restraints or lack of interest; so without further adieu here is my first look into Summer 2014 and my on watch, dropped, and worth picking up anime!

He calls himself "delivery god" and often puts his own cell number on several common places in case someone needs his help. First Look: Winter 2013-2014

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren Episodes Watched: 3 This is easily my favorite anime of the season. It has everything that I want: unique story, great characters, comedy, and finally an anime that takes a relationship past the initial confession. I can't stress enough how rare it is to see an anime that shows the actual relationship develop despite how successful it has been (e.g. Mysterious Girlfriend X). I was afraid that the second season wouldn't hold up to the first, but so far its blown past my expectations with flying colors. The relationship between the Dark Flame Master and Wicked Eye is one of the best romances in anime and this season is just bringing out the best of the two. I think it's following the same pattern of having a happy-go-lucky feel at the start, then hitting hard toward the end so I'm curious to see what that story twist is going to be. If you haven't watched the first season it's a must see especially now a second has been released. Definitely worth picking up this season for any fans of the first season. Read more...

Background: Kraft Lawrence, who chiefly goes by his surname, is a twenty-five-year-old traveling peddler who goes from town to town buying and selling various things in order to make a living. When he was twelve, he became an apprentice to a merchant relative, and set out on his own at eighteen. His goal in life is to gather enough money to start his own shop, and he has already been traveling for seven years while gaining experience in the trade. He meets Holo one night and eventually agrees to her traveling with him. She helps him by providing her wisdom which helps to increase his profits and get him out of jams. Holo is a wolf harvest deity originally from a land in the north known as Yoitsu. She made a promise with men from a town called Pasloe where she would ensure the town would have good wheat harvests year after year. However, as time went on, the townspeople slowly started to forsake Holo and did not rely on her as they once did. As such, Holo escapes from town in Lawrence's wagon and started traveling with him to see how much the world has changed since she has been in Pasloe. Holo has chosen the form of a girl younger than Lawrence, though she still retains her large white-tipped wolf tail, and ears. Her true form is that of a very large wolf which many people revered and feared. Read more...

First Look: Summer 2013

I’m not sure how I feel about this season. I feel like I’m watching a lot of different anime, but none of them really get me excited to watch. There are a couple exceptions like Nekomonogatari (White) and Watamote which peak my interest but I’m not sure they will be “Must watch” material in the end. I think the problem might be the number of moe anime. So let’s jump right to it and start giving my first impressions of this Summer’s anime lineup. The New Anime Anthology

I'm sure all of you have noticed the minor major changes we've made the website. There will still probably be a couple changes happening here and there, but nothing too crazy. This new layout change is actually the reason why I've been lagging behind on the reviews and general posting. I've spent quite a few hours, days, weeks, and I guess you could even say months trying to get this exactly the way I want it. I figure that I'll never see my website as "perfect" which to me is a good thing. I want to make changes, updates, and keep things looking to the future. I would go over the layout like I did the last time, but I'm hoping that people understand it without explanation. I tried to make it as stream line as possible to get to reviews, impressions, previews, and miscellaneous posts. It breaks everything down so you get the information you're looking for faster instead of going through tons of different posts or seeing ones you didn't care so much about. I also tried making it easier to contact and send feedback by adding a quick little Feedback section at the bottom of the page. Sid: MIA Now Found

Hey guys! It feels like it has been forever. I wanted to let you know that I haven't given up on Anime Anthology and I've actually been dying to write a ton of reviews for you. I do have some bad (yet exciting) news. As some of you may know I have recently graduated from college and have been on a journey to find a full time position. I've had a lot of ups and downs where things like anime and friends kept me going strong. For quite a time I've been pretty busy with different projects and job hunts so I had to unfortunately put my reviewing career on hiatus. It was difficult because there were so many good (and bad) series that I wanted to discuss with all of you. I slowly started to get back into it when there was a rather low point in my life to try and keep my chin up. Just as my blog juices started flowing I got an unexpected call from a company outside my state. They asked for an interview and I was more than happy to follow through. A couple weeks of studying and panicking something amazing happened... I landed my possible dream job! I couldn't believe it at first and I had to read over the email again and again to make sure this wasn't some early April Fools prank. I couldn't be happier and things were finally feeling like they would settle down. Wrong. Things just got more intense and fast pace as my life was making a big change. I ended up having to move out of my apartment to a new apartment located accross the United States within two weeks. With the hussle and bussle of phone calls, paperwork, and celebration I soon lost track of time and realized that the reviews I wanted to release previously would now be months late. So what does this mean? Well in short I'm back, kind of. Although I don't have a very stable internet connection right now, I will get one as soon as possible. I'll be back to writing reviews from seasons past and the current season. I may be playing a bit of catch up but hopefully I'll be able to get everything in order soon. I also wanted to take this time to thank my amazing co-writer and co-founder Chidori3souske. She really took the lead with the Spring 2013 Preview and keeping the site up and running. She's done an amazing job over the past year and I can't express my gratitude enough. She has really been my crutch through this whole process. Chidori3souske has done a brilliant video podcast, written multiple reviews, helped with the layout and design, and created Anime Anthology's very first mascot. I'm sure without her Anime Anthology wouldn't be where it is today. I also wanted to thank Hikaru for chatting with me when I stayed up quite a bit later than I should and kept me company as I worked on projects from personal to business. She's helped tremendously by telling me that I should go to bed before I ruined my health and being more than just a co-writer, a friend. Joshua, our newest recruit, as you can see shows a lot of promise. He's done a great job keeping up with reviews of current and past seasons expanding our archives even further. I'm very pleased to have him on the team and disppointed in myself because I never truely got to welcome him to our family. I didn’t’ want to post about this earlier because I figured there were more important things to take care of first (such as reviews). Sadly I wasn’t able to post them before the tournament began and figured it is probably a good idea to mention it. What exactly am I talking about? The AniBlog Tourney of 2012 of course! If you haven’t heard of it well now is your chance. The tournament consists of dozens of anime related blogs that compete to see which is the best (according to voters). The first round of blogs actually just finished today (or yesterday rather) so I’m sorry I didn’t get this out beforehand. Nevertheless there are plenty more to explore and vote for! In case you were wondering the overall bracket here is what it looks like: This is a great chance for everyone to check out veteran and new blogs alike. It doesn’t matter if your blog wins or loses, but getting your name out there and learning how to improve is always an essential part of creating a blog. First Look: Winter 2011-2012 Anime

Believe it or not I’m actually still watching anime despite the absurdly long break from my last post. To do a quick little catch up before I get going on this first look, I’ve just been running around busy this semester. Socially believe it or not. I’m rarely in my room anymore and sometimes I go days without touching a computer. Who knew that an anime geek like me would actually end up more with friends than my computer? Major Website Changes!

Hey guys! After the long awaited theme update it finally been released November 15, 2011 at 4:02AM. Boy was it a struggle, and trust me it isn’t complete just yet! Why did I release it before the 100%, finished design? That’s simple. I wanted people to get used to the new layout and any minor tweaks and changes wont cause any strange ruckus among the readers. So let’s jump right onto the new look and features this blog has to offer.

Navigation

As you can see the navigation has changed considerably, but don’t worry all your favorite links and important information is still right on the main page. The biggest change you may notice is the lack of a sidebar! My, what is this? No sidebar on an anime blog? This is madness! I decided that I wanted to really focus the attention on the posts, which is what I’m sure most of you come to see. The sidebar offered a lot of great tools and tricks to but ultimately was more of a storage space. Now all of the content that was on the side has been pulled into the center or completely scrapped. That isn’t to say that everything will be completely gone forever! I may decide to add a few things later.

Next shift you eyes back up the top of the page to the new navigation bar. Looks pretty plain and simple right? And probably resembles the original design with a bit of color changing. However, you look closely, or rather hover your mouse over a couple of the links you will see that it is now the long awaited dropdown menu. I’ve been playing with this idea for a long time but couldn’t quite get it working on the old site. With a completely revamped theme I was able to create the dropdown menu for more links and better organization. It provides all the main links that most people tend to look for such as Reviews, Season Preview, and Recruiting (ok admittedly the last one is a hope). Now you can jump from one page to another in a snap without having to backtrack.

Moving further down on the main page you will see a slick and sexy image slider. This image slider consists of a lot of important links such as an archive to the latest news, recruitment status, link to the season preview, archive of podcasts, and character of the month. Currently the Character of the Month image only links to the archive of characters, but that will change once a new idea is implemented (but that’s a secret for now ;) ). The images may be subject to change as I am a horrible artist and need to improve my graphic skills. Some of you maybe thinking that there are a lot of redundant links between the navigation menu and slider. That’s because I don’t want you guys to think you NEED javascript enabled to get full functionality of the website. Although it may not look as pretty, you wont be missing out on anything.
Note: If you want to create some graphics for the new slider by all means do! Just send me an email and I’ll give you the specifics (such as dimensions and available features).

Layout

Jumping all the way to the bottom of the page you may notice a new feature. Recent comments! The recent comments will give you quick access to the hottest topics and discussion going on in Anime Anthology. And if you have a cute little gravatar matched with your comment people will get a quick look at that as well. It’s a pretty solution to better discussion.

Now if you look to your left you will notice a unique avatar, date, author name, and category. The avatar is a quick way to spot who the post is by. And if you really enjoy the writers style of writing you can click on their name to get an archive of all posts by them. I figured some of you may be digging for more of chidori3souske’s amazing writing skills ;).

What Is Your Anime History?

It has been a while since we have posted something like this, and I was kind of curious about all of our new readers, why do you like anime? A pretty simple question, or so I thought until I started to think about it myself. I’m also curious about some of the people who don’t like anime. Strange enough I have gotten a few readers that don’t seem to like anime in the first place. I’m not sure if they visit the site because they are trying to get into it, or feel that it isn’t all bad, or maybe just more material to bash what they dislike. Either way I will leave the comments open for anyone who doesn’t like anime either so you don’t’ feel excluded. And like me, you probably don’t all like every single genre, so what are your least favorites? I figured that it probably isn’t the nicest thing to ask someone else why they like anime and not answer it myself.

The reason I like anime isn’t something as simple as “It looks cool”. Although when I was a kid I might have thought that considering I grew up on things like Dragon Ball Z and Naruto, times have changed. My reasoning has changed a bit after watching series like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Welcome to the NHK!, etc. Many anime actually get you thinking about your own life. After sifting through harems, ecchi, fan service, and other such distractions, you may find yourself actually finding deeper meaning in the anime realm. I urge many people to try different types of anime before making a solid judgment. For example, I started watching anime with a lot of action such as Cowboy Bebop. As a kid I probably didn’t care much for anything else or had no interest in genres such as romance. Slowly my tastes began to transition with anime such as Inuyasha which had a combination of romance and action. A couple years later I would say I was rather indiscriminant of any anime. Of course there are some that rub me the wrong way still *cough* True Tears *cough* and others that are completely tasteless *cough* Yosuga no Sora *cough*. Nevertheless for anyone who judges, bashes, or even pokes at those who watch the anime culture, why not at least give it a shot? 

After that brief history I guess I should give you the reason why I like anime so much. Enjoyment that inspired me to create a review website and spread what little knowledge I have of the subject. It is difficult to describe completely so I will do my best by creating a comparison scenario. After a long week at work, ten hour days with little break for nothing more than eating you are exhausted. Your muscle ache, your mind feels numb. Day after day, the same routine of getting up, getting ready, going to work, and coming back home to a most likely unmade bed. You hold on. You keep chugging through it until the day has come: Friday. The final day of work has finally arrived after a week of hell. You watch as the clock ticks down to the end of your shift. It finally strikes closing time and you are officially done with work. Once you exit the doors of your office, your imprisonment, a feeling of joy sweeps over you. Because now it is your time. Your life. Your entertainment. Even if it is only for a short couple days, they feel like an oasis in a vast desert. That is the feeling I get when I watch anime. A time where I can focus on what I want. A break in the hectic times of everyday life. Just as some play sports or video games, anime to me is a time where all the worries of my life vanish, even for a short while. It doesn’t matter if it is a horror, sci-fi, comedy, or romance. Anime is something that I can look forward to when things around me aren’t looking too bright. It is that lighthouse after days at sea saying, “Welcome home”.

Summer 2011 Second Look

Hey guys, I know it has been a while and as you know the in-between seasons are always quite slow for a little ol’ review sight like Anime Anthology. So I thought that you guys might to know what I think of the series so far after a couple weeks. The series I didn’t bother picking up or said I was dropping in the podcast hasn’t changed status. They are either still unwatched or dropped. I feel that my judgment on those were correct. Some of them I nailed on the head but others I’m surprised about. Mostly in a negative fashion though. I’m enjoying the summer line up so far and I think there are some pretty quality series. However, being roughly four to five episodes in none strike as a “must watch” possibility. For my past must watch series by now I see it coming. There is still plenty of room for improvement and plenty of time to really grab my attention. I can’t knock all of them out of the running just yet. Anyway let’s just hit down the list and get this thing going!

Summary: In 2034, two years after the events of 2nd GIG, it is revealed that Major Motoko Kusanagi has left counter-terrorism task force Public Security Section 9. Togusa is leading a Section 9 field team to investigate several suicides by refugees from the Siak Republic. When they intercept Colonel Ka Gael, son of the exiled dictator General Ka Rum, who has taken a hostage to ensure safe passage out of Japan, he claims that the "Puppeteer" is coming for him, and he shoots himself in the head. Chief Daisuke Aramaki asks Prime Minister Yoko Kayabuki for permission to arrest Ka Rum for more information, but Kayabuki declines, stating it would harm her political position. Aramaki orders the raid regardless and Section 9 discovers that Ka Rum has been dead for some time, having been assassinated and staged to look like a suicide, with the word "Puppeteer" written in his blood. Section 9 also discovers that the Siak refugees plan to release a micromachine virus in a terrorist retaliation for Ka Rum's death. Read more...

Fly Away Now, Fly Away Now

Hey guys wanted to give you a quick update about what will be happening the next three weeks. More specifically what I will be up to in the next three weeks. As some of you may share, it is winter break. I was given the lovely gift of traveling to London for three whole weeks! I am actually leaving later today and forgot to post this sooner (oops!). Now what does traveling to another country for three weeks means? Slow updates of course. Now I will try my best to get some reviews up, but I don’t plan on adding images until after I get back. Currently I have MM!, Togainu no Chi, Tamayura, The World God Only Knows, Shinryaku! Ika Musumeand Nurarihyon no Mago lined up. I have completed Oreimo, The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi, and Katanagatari but won’t be able to review those. I will also not be able to review anime (most likely) that are being completed next week. It pains me to say that I wont be able to watch the final episodes of many of them. But come on can you blame me? It’s not like I get to go out of the country all the time.

Which brings us to the next topic. Don’t worry about the website! The wonderful Chidori3souske will be updating when she can and is actually going to be taking lead in my absence. I feel like I have left the website in capable hands as I’m sure you guys do as well. Again, I will try to update (for example writing the reviews on my down time in the airport or what have you) but no guarantees.

Japan's Bill 156 - Ban on Anime

Source Post: Bill 156 So I don’t generally talk about anime news on the site, but this recent bill was brought to my attention and I wanted to give my two cents on it. A little background and quick summary of the post I believe is in order so let us start with that: The bill was first made public November 22, 2010 and has passed. I was looking around for petitions against the bill online with no luck (who takes those online petitions seriously anyway). The general bill doesn’t ban ALL anime per say, but you will see why I titled this post as such later. The first half of the bill states that minors will have restricted access of internet on cellphones to prevent the viewing of 18+ rated material. This will be expanded to anime and manga but not include real life pictures or footage according to Dan Kanemitsu’s post. All publishers who bring out new “unfit” material will be punished if they released more than six in a year.  The filters will most likely also effect minor’s ability to surf the web on their computers by making programs more easily accessible. Long story short, I am indifferent to the filtering of internet access because it is an illegal act to look at 18+ material as a minor and I’m completely against the punishment of publishers. Summary: Set in a post-apocalyptic Japan of the near future where the sea level has risen and flooded much of the coastal areas and Mt. Fuji has erupted within living memory. Local communities have become nations and telephone and television no longer exist (although coffee vending machines and streetlights stubbornly continue to work). There are strange new animals and plants (like flying fish and glowing streetlight trees). The remaining people have adopted a slower-paced, simpler way of life and rely more on each other. Along with the human population are some intelligent, humanoid robots. One of the robots, a female named Alpha, runs a cafe by the same name in the country outside of what remains of Yokohama. One night when stopped at the town of Pasroe, he finds in his wagon a pagan wolf-deity girl named Holo who is over 600 years old. She appears to be a fifteen-year-old girl, except for a wolf's tail and ears. She introduces herself as the town's goddess of harvest, who has kept it blessed with good harvests of wheat for many years. Despite having the responsibility to watch over the town, she wants to go back to her homeland in the north called Yoitsu; she believes the people have already forsaken her and that she has kept her promise to maintain the good harvests. Holo wants also to travel to see how the world has changed while she has remained in one place for years. She manages to bargain her way out of the village by making a deal with Lawrence to take her with him.
