Minami-ke Okaeri

Review: Season three was a definitely step up from season two. They went back to their original style of comedy with mixed in slice of life. This was definitely a smart move on their part, because I don’t think the fans would be too happy with another season two. The art style also changed back to the first season, which I am not sure why? I’d assume budgets and such. This season was my favorite of the three for one reason alone: it had the most Hosaka screen time. Every time he showed up on the screen I couldn’t help but bust up laughing. He is still my absolute favorite character of the show, and possibly of all comedies. Without him I would probably have dropped the scoring for season three (actually the whole series) by a lot. I know I probably shouldn’t base my score off him alone, but he really made the series for me. I actually didn’t find this season any better than the others for any other reason. I think that the producers brought a good angle with season three as well. On top of the better comedy they did mix in a good amount of slice of life to show how tight the sisters are. The ending left you with an “Awwww” moment. Probably the biggest fault was keeping some of the same running gags. The little sister’s “Idiot” line made me want to skip scenes with her in it. It had the cute appeal at first, but it gradually eroded away from constant use. The other running gags ended up the same. What do you expect watching three seasons with constant characters? I can see bringing in anything else would just shift the personalities.
The art as I said was the same as season one. There is one thing that I want to point out though:the artist showed some signs of aging. I don’t know if it was my imagination or not, but when I watched the first episode it seemed like Kana had a more grown up figure. I’m sure you all know what I mean by that. Even Chiki had a couple changes here and there. Though I may need to see a side-by-side comparison to confirm this. I would have liked to see more of the town instead of the same boring apartment.
Final statements: I will leave it at this: if you liked season one you will probably like this one. The only thing that might change that is if you are getting bored of the same jokes. I am grading this as though it is a stand-alone because it can be viewed as such. Thus I will give it the same watchability as season one: preferred watch. I feel the series has a lot of room for improvement, and it might happen if they make a fourth season. No confirmation on that to my knowledge though.
