First Look: Asobi ni Iku yo!

Title: Asobi ni Iku yo! Genre: Comedy, Romance, Science fiction

Summary: The story revolves around Kakazu Kio, an ordinary high school freshman living in Okinawa. A girl with cat ears appears before him during a memorial service for one of his family ancestors. The girl calls herself Eris and claims she is an alien. Before long, fanatical alien worshipers and a mysterious government agency are in hot pursuit of Eris, but Kio's childhood friend Manami — who wants to follow in her father's footsteps in the CIA — captures Eris. Kio finds himself having to protect Eris from everyone.

First Look: Oh another anime with cat girls, guns, and gratuitous amount of fan service? Why of course, being unique is so overrated [end sarcasm]. After watching the first three episodes I think I get a good idea about what this anime is truly going to be about. Fan service. It is obvious that they spent most of their time on the art. Perfecting every curvy, glossy, space cat is top priority for them. I do appreciate an anime with good art style, but not when it is specifically for fan service. For a comedy I hardly ever laugh. I’ve grown tired of the typical boy naked -> innocent girl walks in naked -> blush -> turn -> third girl walks in -> everyone freaks out. All ending with the guy either flashing more girls, or getting beaten up.  This anime screams stereotypical ecchi harem. The main character is nothing less of a loser with few (rather pitiful) shining moments. But he tries so hard to protect his friends! That makes up for it - not. The soundtrack is mediocre, and nothing to take note of. The guns and explosions are kind of cool, but too far between for my tastes.

Final statements: I am not expecting much from this anime in terms of action. The romance and comedy is like any other typical ecchi harem with a loser protagonist, so no high hopes there. Yet I am keeping this one on watch because the secret agency business has potential for a decent story. Hopefully it doesn’t get lost in constant bath scenes and topless cat girls.
