First Look: Occult Academy

Title: Occult Academy Genre: Comedy, Supernatural

Summary: Maya Kumashiro returns to the Waldstein Academy to attend the funeral of the principal, Junichiro Kumashiro, her father. The institute focuses its' studies on paranormal subjects, thus becoming known as the Occult Academy. Maya, a skeptic who hates the occult, meets with Fumiaki Uchida, a time agent from the future sent to 1999 to prevent the apocalyptic Nostradamus Prophecies from happening.

First Look: Occult Academy is considered one of the top releases this season in my eyes. The story is unique and captivating. I wish I could say say the same about the characters though. Other than the protagonist Maya everyone is a little too goofy for my tastes. The time agent can’t seem to get it together at all. The story does explain for his lack of ability in all things related to life but that doesn’t change the fact that I still don’t like him. Maya on the other hand can be considered a good compliment because she is level headed, bad ass, and smart. Doesn’t hurt she is a looker either. The story looks like it will have good development and very open to a twist. The opening video really shows how weird this whole occult thing is. Strange flashing pictures and rock music give the anime a sense of mystery. The art is good and I have no qualms with it. The only thing is the cover they use for Occult Academy can be very misleading. Although it shows Maya’s obvious dominance over the situation, it can lead to misunderstandings.

Final statements: I have this on watch and waiting to see how it ends. Probably going to be one season only.
