First Look: MM!

Title: MM! Genre: Comedy, Romance

MM

Summary: The story centers the life of Taro Sado going through high school. He came to realize his masochist personality and attempts to conceal this from his crush. To fix it, he enrolled in his school's "2nd Volunteer Club".

First Look: MM! stared as my least favorite anime this season. I mean how high expectations could someone have when the story revolves around a masochist? After watching the first episode I thought it would be nothing more than a perverted comedy filled with ecchi moments and fan service. The mid-way transition and ending song didn’t exactly make me think differently. It wasn’t until the next two episodes when I got really into the series. MM! threw me a curve ball when I realized it isn’t so light and happy as expected. Once the anime introduced drama it got a lot better. Now I tend to shy away from anime that introduce drama at such an early stage because it usually ends up being a roller coaster of emotions, but I want to give this one a shot. So far I’m liking almost everything about it. The art style is very colorful, the characters are pretty entertaining, and the story seems to be picking up well. The only worry I have is they will drop the drama and revert back to scenes like in episode one (mindless violence and awkward fetishes) for the rest of the season. However, from the looks of it his “problem” of being a masochist doesn’t play that large a roll in the overall relationship between him and his female friend. Another big plus are the VA. They all fit perfectly with their character sets. I really couldn’t believe how well it all worked out.

Final statements: After quick inspection I decided I will keep MM! on watch and fully review it at the end of the season. I just hope my new found expectations revert back to my originals.
