Background: Ryuuko Matoi is a 17-year-old who transfers as a second-year student into Honnouji Academy, an Academy ruled by power and authority. She wields a huge single-bladed scissor, and demands to know the owner of the second half. As she remembers, the wielder of the lost half of the scissor blade is the same person who killed her father.

Reason for CotM: I think anyone who watches Kill la Kill would agree with this choice for the new year. Ryuuko Matoi is one of the most badass, touching, and caring people in recent anime. She’s an amazing character and has done a lot of growing up in the series. When you first meet her you see her as a hot-headed violent girl who would do anything and everything to get what she wants. You slowly realize that she has a moral standard and guideline to her life. Despite her red streak hair she isn’t just your average delinquent. The reason why she is such an amazing character isn’t just because of her amazing powers; Ryuuko’s friendship with Mako has made a great stride to how characters should develop. They both look out for each other and it shows a more sensitive side to this tough girl.

She is becoming one of my favorite female leads in anime and can’t wait to see what she has in store. What do you guys think about this scissor wielding dynamite?
