Shinryaku!? Ika Musume
Title: Shinryaku!? Ika Musume
Genre: Comedy
Rating: 5.8/10
Summary: Second season of Shinryaku! Ika Musume.
Review: The next season of Shinryaku! Ika Musume eh? Sure I wouldn’t mind seeing the crazy adventures of the little Squid Girl again. Who knows maybe it will be better? More laughs? More fun? Oh wait. This is the second season of a pure comedy show. It has an 80% chance of failing miserably by reusing old material, introducing boring characters, and having no lasting appeal. Sadly enough the anime’s strong point was learning about the little things of this strange creature coming out of the blue to invade us land folk. After the first season you learn just about all there is to her. The second season didn’t offer any new information and ended up being stale for me. So sad to say but this is basically a comparison review with rather little to say. It is safe to say that the animation quality and soundtrack were roughly on the same track. So let’s just right into the story.
I’m not trying to be lazy but there is expectedly little to say about the second season of a comedy. For those of you haven’t watched the first you wouldn’t pick up the second. And for those of you who watched the first you will most likely watch the second. Kind of leaves this review pointless. Nevertheless I’ll trudge on and try my best to explain exactly why I don’t consider this second season that great. The biggest reason is the jokes weren’t funny anymore. I put off episodes week after week because I found better things to do in my time, like not procrastinating or finding more entertaining ways to procrastinate. On the off Wednesdays of anime I watched about two or three episodes at a time of Shinryaku! Ika Musume. Maybe that was the reason I found the jokes to be repetitive? I didn’t have the week break many other viewers had to really let the jokes sink in. Nah. That can’t be it. In the the second season there are a couple new characters introduced. Rarely reoccurring and very minor in the scheme of things. They were basically friends of friends. I will admit that the series did make me laugh on the occasion and I did have a smile across my face for some of it. However, a majority of the time it was boring and more of a chore to watch. Multiple times I told myself that I’m only finishing off the season for the review. There were a couple episodes that I quite enjoyed. They weren’t for the comedy though. Just as the first season ended on a touching note so did the second. These minor little bumps of drama made the series a tad more interesting and gave a heart warming feeling in the end. I find that the occasional laugh and sweet moments just aren’t worth waiting for over an entire season. If there is a third season I’m going to probably skip it. I don’t see the series getting better if I was already bored half way through the second season. For those die hard fans I could see this one still being entertaining. For the rest of us who just had it going on in the background don’t give it a glance. Sorry Squid Girl you didn’t invade my heart.
Final statements: Sad to say but there isn’t much else to say about a second season comedy. The series probably only appeal to people who were big fans of the first season. I didn’t find the cute actions of Squid Girl appealing and I didn’t get the laughs I was expecting. For me it is an avoid watch because it didn’t quite meet my expectations. I feel there are other comedies out there worth taking this series’ place.
