ep1_1

If you haven’t started watching any titles yet this season, let this list help you narrow down your choices.

Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova (Dropped)
Episodes Seen: 2
Rating: 6.0/10

This turned out to be a harem for the ship captain and insanely powerful battleships that have their maiden personas. I’m not sticking around to find out which ship/girl falls for the captain next.

BlazBlue: Alter Memory (Dropped)
Episodes Seen: 2
Rating: 6.0/10

How ironic is it that the first episode ended with a direct statement of wanting to erase the jinx on anime based on fighting games? That was a failure and the jinx continues. Those who have never played the game are thrown into a time loop where Ragna the Bloodedge continues to fight and fall with the enemy. I hate to say how boring and uninteresting it struck me that I had to drop this title so soon.

Diabolik Lovers (Dropped)
Episodes Seen: 2
Rating: 6.0/10

In this otome game adaptation, the heroine is trapped in a house home to vampire. I like my bishies with character and these vampires are just sadists. Dropped.

Galilei Donna
Episodes Seen: 6
Rating: 7.5/10

Three girls are going around the world in search for the Galileo Tesoro, Galileo’s rumored treasure. With an evil organization and sky pirates on their tail, Galileo’s descendants must obtain the treasure first and reunite with their parents.

It’s a very interesting plot, especially for science-lovers. And who can resist a genius loli piloting a giant goldfish in the sky anyway?

Golden Time
Episodes Seen: 6
Rating: 8.0/10

Tada Banri has just entered law school. Beneath his cheerful exterior is a a fragile existence suffering from amnesia. How will Kaga Koko and her so-called love for Tada Banri’s newest friend Yanagisawa Mitsuo change him?

For a seemingly ordinary romcom, Golden Time actually has anĀ  emotional and dramatic plot. The main characters Banri and Koko are quite intriguing and I can’t wait to see how their story will unfold.

Gundam Build Fighters
Episodes Seen: 5
Rating: 7.0/10

Sei Iori wants to enter the Gunpla tournament, a competition where Gundam fight in a battle arena. He is confident about his building skills but control was not his forte. He finally meets the person most suitable to control the Gundam he builds only that he is not from this world. Will he and Reiji be able to win the Gunpla tournament together?

First off, this show ain’t just for the kids. Kids at heart is a given but more than that, it is for those who enjoy putting together their own Gundam models. The concept of making something to have it fight in a battle is similar to that of Angelic Layer but instead of dolls, we have Gundam. The Gunpla battles and the crossover of mecha from the different Gundam titles make this an enjoyable watch for Gundam franchise fans.

Infinite Stratos Season 2
Episodes Seen: 5
Rating: 7.0/10

Orimura Ichika’s Byakushiki continues to be a mystery in the IS world, being the only one piloted by a guy. Aside from the girls in school, Ichika is targeted by the mysterious Phantom Task to steal his Byakushiki. This is the same harem series from the first season and I’m only sticking around for the mystery in the story and Ichika’s seiyuu.

op_1op_3

Kill la Kill
Episodes Seen: 6
Rating: 8.0/10

Let me tell you two pieces of useful information. 1- Kill La Kill is awesome. 2- Senketsu is the best uniform/friend ever.

Anyone who has loved Gurren Lagann cannot miss watching this.

Kuroko no Basket Season 2
Episodes Seen: 5
Rating: 9.0/10

The much-awaited second season continues the story of the phantom sixth player Kuroko Tetsuya and the Seirin basketball team.

Kurobas makes a smooth transition from its one year absence with a short introduction in the first episode. After losing the Inter High, a new Seirin High School Basketball Team takes a shot at the Winter Cup. The remaining two members of the Generation of Miracles, Kagami’s childhood friend, and the so-called Uncrowned Generals join the fray this season. Aside from new characters, we’re bound to see new and definitely awesome techniques from our favorites.

Oldcodex does another adrenaline pumping opening theme fit for the series. Production IG also continues to do justice to this manga adaptation with its animation. The remaining question will be whether we can have a proper ending since the manga is still ongoing.

op_1ep4_1

Kyoukai no Kanata
Episodes Seen: 5
Rating: 7.5/10

“Do I look like a normal human to you?”

This series is worth watching more for the emotional tug in your heart since the school-life and fantasy mix do not blend well enough yet. The comedy is forced and the characters still 2d. On the other hand, Kyoukai no Kanata’s OP and ED themes are among the best one this season.

op_1op_4
Log Horizon
Episodes Seen: 6
Rating: 8.0/10

Seeing the words “online game” and “trapped” immediately reminds us of SAO. Log Horizon can be considered a light-hearted version since death is not really an issue in the game and real-life. It’s all about facing their current reality while living the most out of their new adventure.

op_1op_2

Machine Doll wa Kizutsukanai
Episodes Seen: 5
Rating: 7.0/10

In search for his family’s murderer, Akabane Raishin becomes a puppeteer and enters Royal Academy. Tagged “Second Last”, he must fight his way against 100 other puppeteers to become the best and get closer to his goal.

Had this been more focused on the mystery and the battles rather than the forced fanservice, I’m pretty sure this would have earned a higher rating in my book.

op_1ep1_2

Magi: The Kingdom of Magic
Episodes Seen: 5
Rating: 7.0/10

This second season features the Magnostadt arc of the manga and this adaptation has been faithful so far. More battles and magic await. And given the flashforward in the first episode, viewers can gauge how much story the anime will cover.

op_1ep1_1

Meganebu (Dropped)
Episodes Seen: 1
Rating: 6.0/10

Their club exists to create an xray glasses for the benefit of all men. Never have I seen a more ridiculous plot than this one. Couldn’t even stand to finish the first episode. Dropped.

op_1op_2

Outbreak Company
Episodes Seen: 6
Rating: 8.0/10

Elves and other non-human races are about to discover otaku culture! What’s amazing about this title is beyond the fandom lies the value for freedom and equality.

op_1op_2

Strike the Blood
Episodes Seen: 5
Rating: 7.5/10

The world’s strongest vampire goes to school like any normal human since he was previously one anyway. The arrival of an observer plunges him into the threads of conflict between humans and demons.

5 episodes in and there’s nothing exceptional about Strike the Blood. It’s your regular shounen fantasy.

op_1ep1_1

Super Seisyun Brothers
Episodes Seen: 7
Rating: 7.0/10

These two sets of brother-sister pair make an amusing 5-minute series each week.

op_1op_2

Tokyo Ravens
Episodes Seen: 5
Rating: 7.5/10

Harutora Tsuchimikado wanted to live a normal life, away from the onmyou arts because he was not gifted with spirit sense. After hearing a certain wish, he strives to keep the promise of becoming the best shaman.

The plotline of having an ancestor who broke the rules, as well as the concept of reincarnation, is like a shadow of Shaman King. The battles so far felt one-sided in favor of the main characters. OP and ED themes are common J-pop/rock and easily forgettable.

op_1ep1_1

Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku wo Ketsui wa Shimashita (Dr0pped)
Episodes Seen: 5
Rating: 7.0/10

The harsh reality is that not everyone can be a hero. So what becomes of them when the demon king is defeated by another? They live a life and get a job.

No, this is nothing like Hataraku Maou-sama. The comedy feels forced and the fanservice is annoying. However, even heroes and demons are subjected to the same struggles of reality like getting a job which at least gives a connection to its viewers. I might pick this up again once I get more time but for now, dropped.
