Best Anime of 2014

Already on my third year but it still isn’t easy to pick out my top 10 best anime for the year. This selection is chosen from titles that I have seen and finished airing in 2014.

10. Kill la Kill

Gurren Lagann finally has its counterpart! But beyond the super-powered uniforms and extraordinary battle against alien clothing, we are reminded not to lose our way and to believe in the power of friendship.

9. Nobunagun

Oda Nobunaga and other key historical figures are brought to life in an action-packed battle against invaders from outer space. Nobunagun offers a refreshing take on the personalities and even identities of these characters and successfully puts them all together in a short yet very enjoyable series.

8. Aldnoah.Zero

It begins and ends with a rekindled war. We have witnessed the tenacity of humans even in the face of beings with superior technology. The clash of wills and weapons alike are brilliantly executed thanks to its animation and excellently chilling music. Unfortunately, plot credibility is hinged upon the shoulders of its upcoming second season where loopholes and twists can make or break the franchise.

7. Isshukan Friends

There are memories we wish to forget but a lot more others we wish to remember in our lifetime. But what if we didn’t have a choice and lost our happy memories every week? The weekly struggle did a good job in pulling some heartstrings.

6. Haikyuu!!

Volleyball can be as cool as basketball too! The gaping hole left by the excitement of last year’s Kuroko no Basket has been filled all too willingly by Haikyuu!! Similarly, we have 2 key characters, a black horse (or in this case crow) team, and a championship to be won.

5. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

One of the best romantic comedy I have seen so far. No episode will pass without a laugh or two from lines delivered timely by the perfect characters to do so. Don’t miss out on the special episodes that are as hilarious as the main series!

4. No Game No Life

Anime and gaming fans alike would not find it hard to sympathize with the feelings of legendary character Blank who have grown weary of a world that is chaotic, unreasonable and unfair. Everything then takes place in the fantasy world of Disboard where humans fight a losing war but learn to find strength even in their weakness. With seemingly logical schemes and plot twists, No Game No Life is an entertaining light novel adaptation to look out for.

3. Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii

Animosity begins the love story of a King and a Princess. These two lead characters, their personalities and emotions, were developed well and have mainly driven this one-cour series. It does not pretend to be anything else but your plain old story of romance in royalty and this simplicity is its greatest strength.

2. Barakamon

“The role of the young is to break new ground without fear of failure. Remain in memories, not record books! Lose the battle, win the war!”

An inspiring and comedic tale of a calligrapher in search of a writing style he can call his own. This is a perfect feel-good series on a hot summer day.

1. Zankyou no Terror

For what reason does Sphinx give riddles? Lies, conspiracies and a dark past are unearthed through the efforts of two gifted boys and an earnest detective. It had a unforgettable ending that tells us of the hope that lies at the bottom of Pandora’s Box.
