First Look: Winter 2015

Unfortunately for my extremely busy work schedule I wasn’t able to pick up as many series as I wanted to this season, but I’ll see what I can do about keeping up with the ones I’m watching. Although after watching the first few episodes of many series, I can’t say I am too thrilled about any of them.

I’m quite a fan of the first season, topping the season with some of the best mech battles and soundtrack. However, I didn’t want to give this second season a worth picking up simply because it could go in any direction. The biggest problem I have is with the season opening seemingly undoing the cliffhanger of season one.  I knew it was too good to be true, but I wanted to hope that this series would be something new. I do like the political direction Aldnoah.Zero is taking, Slaine becoming a much more involved character was a pretty big game changer for me. All in all I look forward to seeing how this one ends while simultaneously being worried.

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu, or Assassin Classroom, is another series I’m not too sure about but plan to watch for the rest of the season. I get where the series is leading toward, but I don’t see it keeping up in terms of entertainment. It seems like each episode is going to follow the same formula, and the best they could do to spice things up is show the struggles of each individual student. Even then that could get old pretty quick. The first few episodes have been decently entertaining to watch and probably sitting in the low priority range. I can’t see it becoming any better without pulling out some ridiculous stops. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I’m quite happy that I decided to write this first look after watching the third episode because it made a big difference on how I look at the series. The first episode was meant purely as a hook to get people excited with drama. The second was used to get you questioning what is “good” and “bad”, that even judges can make the wrong decision. It gave a little more insight about what this special bar was truly about. However, the third episode makes you realize that not ever death has to end in turmoil and regret. Matched with a glorious opening, this series has potential to be the best of the new series.

I think it’s safe to say that I’m really enjoying Durarara x2 so far. It’s something I have been looking forward to since the first season ended. To finally get it seems like a dream come true. Please if you haven’t picked up this series yet do it!

Ok, ok I know that this is a food porn anime and the not-so-subtle innuendos can be a bit odd, but I can’t help to enjoy it. Maybe I’m blinding by SHAFT productions, maybe it’s only good compared to what else is out this season, or maybe I just enjoy a good slice of life. It’s just a sweet tale of a girl cooking for her friends, not much to complain about.

I’m very excited for this season as I’m sure most people are. They’ve done a brilliant job getting you back into the swing of things, and watching the backstory of the Generation of Miracles is a nice change of pace. The animation is still solid, I still get adrenaline rushes with every shot, and can’t wait to see how the players overcome their weaknesses. If you haven’t picked up this series yet I’ll say the same I did for the second season, do it!

I tried to give this one a good shot before making my decision. I’m still a bit on the fence about it because there is one thing about it that I do find truly interesting. The idea of having the powers based on passed lives is kind of cool; especially after seeing what those past lives entailed. Sadly the series also suffers from the cliché harem, character types, powerful yet oblivious main characters, and poor comedy. The animation also leaves much to be desired. Other than the occasional well done action scenes most of the series suffers from robotic character movements and boring scenery. We’ll see if I end up picking this up again, but odds are slim to none.

I really just didn’t find Sengoku Musou that enjoyable. Nothing about it wanted me to keep going and I don’t have nearly enough time to watch it. This is going to be another drop for me this season.

The Rolling Girl

Episodes Watched: 3

I held The Rolling Girl off till the last minute to start watching. I decided to give all three episodes a watch in one sitting and I’m glad I did. I think if I watched it each week I’d have completely forgotten the last episode and been lost the entire time. Not saying that I wasn’t lost even in a single sit through. However, something about it makes me want to come back each week. I may decide to hold off until the final episode comes out then marathon through it though. The comedy is solid, the characters are loveable, and surprisingly the animation during fighting scenes are better than some purely action anime. I don’t really know what I will think of The Rolling Girl at the end, but I’m more than happy to roll with it.

Tokyo Ghoul S2 - 01Tokyo Ghoul S2 - 02Tokyo Ghoul S2 - 04

Tokyo Ghoul √A

Episodes Watched: 3

The second season of Tokyo Ghoul has made a big turn from the first. Although I did enjoy the first season and looked forward to the second, it was mostly the ending that got me wishing for more. While the first spent much of its time creating a broken, whimpy lead, the second shows a different side of Ken. You don’t really know what his true intentions are, or what he stands for which keeps me coming back each week to figure out more. There have been some slow episodes despite only having three aired so far. I’m hoping that the series doesn’t drag on too long and all the new ghouls being introduce are unique in their personalities and power.

Yoru no Yatterman - 01Yoru no Yatterman - 02Yoru no Yatterman - 03

Yoru no Yatterman

I didn’t expect to like this series as much as I do. It has a mix of serious adventure and childlike innocence. I love the fact that they play upon the “winners write the history books”. It shows the darker side of the so-called hero of justice. The way I see it, Yoru no Yatterman can either end up being one of the best of the season, or an absolutely failure. So far though it’s looking pretty great. The adventure has just begun and I’m very excited to see what journey it takes us on.

Yuri Kuma Arashi - 02Yuri Kuma Arashi - 03Yuri Kuma Arashi - 04

Yuri Kuma Arashi

I dropped this one like a ton of bricks. I had absolutely no idea what was going on, and I could only assume this was some crazy extravagant comedy that went way over my head. I mean it can’t be serious right? The characters were all over the place, and the forceful sparkle sounds and “growls” got more and more irritating as time passed. Pretty much the only thing that I could give this anime were the backgrounds. They had some pretty amazing scenery all things considered. Though you only saw three areas so I guess diversity wasn’t their strong suite. Then again nothing was really Yuri Kuma Arashi’s strong suite.
