I try not to be cynical when it comes to the anime previews, however, after a first few episodes of this season I can’t say I’m too excited. There are a couple that stand out as possibly high priority watches if not must sees, but many have fallen to a drop. Thankfully there are still plenty left after my purge to keep my going for the season. Check out what I consider to watch, drop, and pick up

Arslan Senki - 01Arslan Senki - 02

Arslan Senki

Episodes Watched: 3

I didn’t think I would enjoy Arslan Senki as much as I have. The series has done a surprisingly good job keeping me at the edge of my seat each episode. Although I don’t think it’s currently worth picking up I could see this being a pretty decent watch for the season. The main reason is due to the fact that it has taken 3 episodes to get as far as it has. I find the pacing to be rather slow despite being thrown into an intense battle in episode two. I’m worried that the direction of the series will lead to some upsetting results.

Denpa Kyoushi - 01Denpa Kyoushi - 02

Denpa Kyoushi

In addition to the dated art the story for Denpa Kyoushi is far from captivating. None of the characters seem that interesting and the comedy is stale. Two episodes in I have no idea where the series will go nor do I care. I’m all for corny motivational speeches from anime, but even this one was too much for me. You were getting fired because you were accused of molesting someone and so you saved face with students by giving them an item in a game? I feel even if I had more time to watch anime I would still be dropping this one.

Probably my favorite new series this season. I was very worried after the first episode that this would be overthrown by ecchi and moe moments. I was proven wrong after the second and third episodes which had quite a bit of heart to them. The action scenes were exciting to watch and I’m legitimately curious about Bell. Albeit the path toward a harem is apparent, the relationships between the characters are well done. Bell’s boyish charms and sense of duty is inspiring. Of all the new series this season this is the most promising. So I’m going to suggest picking it up.

Ghost in the Shell Arise Alternative Architecture - 01Ghost in the Shell Arise Alternative Architecture - 02

It’s probably obvious that I would say Ghost in the Shell is one worth picking up considering how much I praised the movie releases. Plus we are getting more content in the end? Personally I think everyone should wait to marathon the series and enjoy the sci-fi goodness.

Gunslinger Stratos - 01Gunslinger Stratos - 02

Gunslinger Stratos

REALLY on the fence about keeping Gunslinger Stratos on watch. Quite honestly the animation could be a lot better considering it’s primarily an action anime, and you have to take a lot of the story at face value. The technology isn’t explained in the slightest, and the motivation to fight their doppelgangers is loosely put together. I’m going to cross my fingers that the series decides to flesh out the details a bit more in later episodes, because if not this is going to turn out to be an avoid watch.

Hibike! Euphonium - 01Hibike! Euphonium - 02

Hibike! Euphonium

Another series that I’m on the fence about, but ultimately decided to call it an on watch. The story isn’t unique and it will probably have some high school drama, but I wanted my music anime fix. Currently I’m predicting it to be a low priority watch, heavily carried by its art and soundtrack. Hopefully this one picks up a bit and keeps me interested.

Kekkai Sensen - 01Kekkai Sensen - 02

Kekkai Sensen

It only took me two episodes to realize this anime was worth watching. The art style, soundtrack, action, comedy, and mystery are all reasons to pick this one up. It is light hearted yet has a strange dramatic atmosphere wrapped around it. It’s the kind of badass ride I want to strap myself in for. I hope you come along for the ride as well.

Kyoukai no Rinne - 01Kyoukai no Rinne - 02

Kyoukai no Rinne

I was on the fence about dropping this one, but ultimately I had to in the interest of time. I don’t think it’s a bad comedy and I kind of got over the old school art style. However, with better options out there I had to make a decision. Even though I’m not going to be watching it this season I don’t’ think it’s a bad series and welcome anyone else to watch it in my place.

Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku - 01Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku - 02

Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku

Episodes Watched: 2

I actually held off on watching this one for quite a while and only picked it up recently to do this first look. I’m sad that I took so long to watch it because I do actually enjoy it quite a bit. It has some great comedy and dazzling artwork. It reminds me a lot of Maria Holic  and Baka to Test (season 1), two series which I loved. I have high hopes for this anime.

Ore Monogatari!! - 01Ore Monogatari!! - 02

Ore Monogatari!!

Episodes Watched: 1

I’m mostly dropping this one for the sake of time. I don’t think that the romance is anything special and I wont really become invested in the series like many other romances out there. Nothing more I can really say about it honestly.

Plastic Memories - 01Plastic Memories - 02

Plastic Memories

Episodes Watched: 4

A real feel trains anime. Despite breaking the tension from time-to-time with bits of comedy, I could easily see Plastic Memories becoming a tear jerker. The balance between laughs and sorrow has been good so far, but I do hope they move more toward drama. Although it is in my top 5 of the season, I don’t want to tell you to pick it up because the story isn’t that suspenseful so far. It’s rather obvious the direction the series is heading towards so I’m afraid it may be too predictable.

Punch Line - 01Punch Line - 02

Punch Line

Episodes Watched: 1

Bad. Just bad. I was so disappointed because the soundtrack and art are probably the best of the season, but the story is terrible. I was really hoping to push past the ecchi, but when you’re entire plot revolves around the main character seeing panties it’s unavoidable. Dropped.

Re-Kan! - 01Re-Kan! - 02

Re-Kan!

Episodes Watched: 3

My favorite comedy of the season and has easily made me laugh each episode. The only reason I don’t consider it worth picking up is because comedies can easily become repetitive and the running gags wont be able to keep up. Another reason I wanted to keep it on watch is because it does have some rather engaging story arcs. I’m hoping that the breaks from comedy will keep the anime fresh and interesting.

Seraph of the End - 01Seraph of the End - 02

Seraph of the End

Episodes Watched: 3

I don’t think this anime is bad, but I also don’t’ think it’s good. The first episode was interesting, the second kind of bored me, and the third brought it back to average. It seems like it could be the lead dark anime of the season, but nothing solidified yet. I’ll bee keeping this one on watch since it does have some potential. Hopefully it doesn’t fall flat and focus on high school life in a post apocalyptic world.

Shokugeki no Soma - 01Shokugeki no Soma - 02

Shokugeki no Soma

Episodes Watched: 1

Well my assumptions were right, this anime was far too ecchi for me. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the story but I thought if the animation was good enough I could watch it. Sadly the decided to poor all their efforts into showing seductive scenes rather than coming up with an interesting story. Dropped.

The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan - 01The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan - 02

The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan

Episodes Watched: 3

I was kind of excited to watch a spin off of Haruhi, but I ended up being rather disappointed. Unless you a big fan of Yuki x Kyon you’re probably not going to enjoy this one either. Even after Haruhi was introduced it didn’t have the same flare as the original series. On a positive note, however, the series does a good job keeping the timelines consistent. For those of you who haven’t watched or read The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzuymiya you’ll probably be a bit lost. As someone who has done both I appreciated how they tied everything together. Unfortunately I didn’t appreciate it enough to keep watching.
