Name: Hachiman Hikigaya
Anime: Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru
Voiced By: Takuya Eguchi
Class: 2-F
Club: Service Club

Background: Hachiman Hikigaya is the main protagonist of Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. He is a student in class 2F of Sōbu High School and the second member of the Service Club.

Reason for CotM:  I recently decided to jump on the SNAFU train a couple years after its season one release and I’ve come to regret waiting so long. Hikigaya started out as a cynical, brooding, unintentional comedian and turned into one of the most relatable characters. The series did an amazing job building up Hikigaya’s personality as well as the supporting cast around him over two seasons. I felt that the writers never intended him to change his personality in any way, but rather learn to adapt what is best for him and his lifestyle. While many other anime force their characters to dramatically change their way thinking, Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru realized that isn’t what real people do. The idea of friendship isn’t to accept everyone and everything, but rather hold the ones close to you dear. The way Hikigaya treated each person differently is a great example of how people truly are. He was very kind and open with his sister (the person he felt closest to), defensive against Yukino, and weary of Yui when the anime first started. However, over time he began to adjust his attitude toward the people around them based on their demeanor and his personal interactions with them. Hachiman Hikigaya’s character and development alone is a reason to pick up Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru, thus making him our July 2015 character of the month.

Name: Nagisa Shiota
Anime: Assassination Classroom
Voiced By: Mai Fuchigami
Class: 3-E
Specialty: Deception, Data Collection

Background: Nagisa is a calm, collected, and friendly individual. He is exceptionally observant and circumspect of his surroundings and the situations that develop around him. He tends to pay strict attention to Korosensei in hopes to understand the motives of this mysterious being and compiles the information he has gathered in his notes for reference.

Reason for CotM:  When I first started watching Assassination Classroom I actually didn’t find Nagisa that impressive. In fact, he was probably the most underwhelming character in the season despite being the pseudo main for the series. While he provided some neat insight and gave a little charm to the series by writing down random notes about Korosenei, nothing about him really stood out. It wasn’t until the season was coming to a close that you really get to the see the strength of Nagisa. It seems obvious to me now, but the greatest strength of an assassin is one that is underestimated. The slow build up of his character definitely had one of the highest payoffs of character develop. When (if) the second season of Assassination Classroom is released I know Nagisa will be a big reason I pick it up.

Name: Bell Cranel
Anime: Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka?
Voiced By: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka
Family: Hestia
Weapon: Hestia’s Dagger

Background: Bell was raised by his grandfather in a rural village near the labyrinth city Orario as a farmer. He heard and read many stories about heroes from his grandfather, making him aspire to become one.

Reason for CotM: Bell has quickly become my favorite character of Spring 2015 for his honest attitude and childish innocence. Let’s also not forget the fact that he’s a total badass. Over the last few episodes of Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka? you’ve seen Bell bloody, beat down, and broken. However, he always gets back up in order to protect the ones he cares about. The relationship he has with Hestia is something I’m quite amazed by because many anime would have taken it in a completely different direction. Despite Hestia’s obvious obsession with Bell, their relationship isn’t the typical one sided love you see in most harem anime. Whether he is treating her to dinner or protecting her against a terrifying beast, Bell has always showed his gratitude toward the only Goddess that would take him in. It’s always nice to see a character who never forgets his roots.

Name: Decim
Anime: Death Parade
Voiced By: Tomoaki Maeno
Occupation: Arbiter, Bartender

Background: Decim is the bartender of Quindecim and an acting arbiter for the dead.

Reason for CotM: I thought I would choose someone from my list of “preferred anime couples” or “unofficial anime couples”, but I decided to go for something different this month. Decim isn’t anyone extravagant, in fact he seems rather stone faced. However, over the past couple episodes of Death Parade you begin to see that behind that cold stare he does have a heart. He cares for the people around him, and for the ones he has to judge. Despite working for years he still has a sense of loyalty and compassion for humans. Although he may not be a lover, or even an interest in anyone’s eyes I wanted to choose him for the February character of the month. Who knows, maybe he’ll end up surprising us all in the end.
